KPKKT and B.K.B. Hevea Join GFTN-Malaysia
Kumpulan Pengurusan Kayu Kayan Terengganu (KPKKT) and B.K.B Hevea Products Sdn. Bhd joined the Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) in Malaysia, WWF’s initiative to save the world’s most valuable and threatened forests. The Global Forest & Trade Network Workshop in Lao PDR
Vientiane Capital – With Lao PDR’s forestry sector booming in the midst of unprecedented national and regional economic development the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is facilitating the first Global Forest and Trade Network-Laos (GFTN-Laos) workshop tomorrow, Tuesday September 16th, at Lao Plaza. Elephants and WWF staff form the flying squads in Tesso Nilo National Park, Riau Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Their job is to drive back wild elephants that approach human settlements, where they can cause considerable damage, injuries and even death. Encroachment by palm oil plantations into elephant habitat have greatly increased conflicts between humans and elephants.

Too much illegal wood in EU markets - WWF
Brussels, Belgium: Almost one-fifth of wood imported into the European Union in 2006 came from illegal or suspected illegal sources, with Russia, Indonesia and China being the main sources, says a new WWF report. The global conservation organisation calls for strong European legislation to prevent illegal wood entering the EU markets.

Commitment to improve the management of valuable and threatened forests

– Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. joined the Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN), World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) initiative to save the world’s most valuable and threatened forests, WWF announced today. By joining the GFTN, Wal-Mart has committed to phasing out illegal and unwanted wood sources from its supply chain and increasing its proportion of wood products originating from credibly certified sources – for Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Clubs in the United States. » Read more

Major Manufacturers Commit to Responsibly Source Forest Products

Hanoi – On Tuesday evening, 26 February 2008, the Vietnam Forest and Trade Network (VFTN) announced two new members in an official ceremony. The new members are Nestco Ltd., a timber trading company, and the Tran Duc Group, a wood-processing manufacturer.

Staples Ends Contracts With Asia Pulp on Environment

From Bloomberg.com: Staples Inc., the world's largest office-supplies retailer, ended its contracts with Asia Pulp & Paper Co. because of its environmental practices. The retailer stopped its 11-year relationship with Asia Pulp in late January, spokesman Owen Davis wrote in an e-mail today. Staples got about 5 percent of its paper from Asia Pulp, which it used in some Staples-brand products. Davis declined to disclose the value of the contracts.
