Madrid, Spain - Inaugurated by Mrs. Soraya Rodríguez, the Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation, WWF Spain and WWF in Portugal launched the Global Forest & Trade Network - Iberia (GFTN-Iberia) today at the Construtec 2008 construction trade fair.

Heavy Penalties Proposed for Illegal Timber Traders
From Timber Trade Journal: Those caught knowingly selling illegal timber in the UK could face up to five years in prison and a £100,000 fine as part of a new bill being tabled by Barry Gardiner MP. Mr Gardiner, the prime minister's special envoy for forests, is introducing the legislation to the House of Commons as a private member's bill with the backing of Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs. » Read more

EU Urges Russia to Reconsider Rise in Export Duties on Timber
From International Herald Tribune: European Union officials urged Russia on Tuesday to reconsider an increase in duties on raw timber exported to EU nations, warning the decision will hurt Moscow's bid to join the World Trade Organization. Russian authorities said Tuesday the country was raising its tax on exports to 25 percent, or €15 (US$23.72) per cubic meter, Russian media reported. The old rate stood at 20 percent, or €10 (US$15.81) per cubic meter. » Read more

From Friends of the Earth: Amsterdam/Brussels - Friends of the Earth is calling on the European Commission to adopt environmental legislation to prevent illegal timber from being sold on the European market, following an investigation which discovered illegal or destructively logged timber in four EU construction projects. The timber originated from the Amazon, Central Africa, Russia and Indonesia, where large-scale illegal and destructive logging takes place and timber is purchased from suppliers that engage in illegal logging. » Read more
