Ministers, governors commit to saving Sumatra
New hope was extended to some of the world's most diverse and endangered forests today as WWF, four Indonesian ministers and ten provincial governors announced a bold commitment to protect the remaining forests and critical ecosystems of Sumatra.

MEPs Want End to Illegally Imported Timber
From the European Parliament: MEPs last week "reluctantly" endorsed an international agreement on the tropical timber trade. Members were lukewarm about the accord as they think it insufficient to protect tropical rainforests and to allow consumers a choice when buying wood or furniture. MEPs urged the European Commission to swiftly bring forward legislation to ban illegally logged tropical timber from the European market. » Read more

Brazil: Amazon Destruction Up in August
From Forbes.com: Rio de Janiero - The Amazon is being deforested more than twice as fast as last year, Brazilian officials said Monday, acknowledging a sharp reversal after three years of declines in the deforestation rate. Brazil's Environment Minister Carlos Minc said upcoming nationwide elections are partly to blame, with mayors in the Amazon region turning a blind eye to illegal logging in hopes of gaining votes locally. » Read more

International Tropical Timber Agreement Not Enough to Protect Forests
From the European Parliament: The House welcomes the conclusion of the 2006 ITTA (International Tropical Timber Agreement) but considers that the outcome falls well short of what is required to address the loss of tropical forest. MEPs therefore call on the Commission and Member States to increase the financial resources available for the conservation and ecologically responsible use of tropical forests and to promote economically viable alternatives to destructive logging, mining and agricultural practices. » Read more

KPKKT and B.K.B. Hevea Join GFTN-Malaysia
Kumpulan Pengurusan Kayu Kayan Terengganu (KPKKT) and B.K.B Hevea Products Sdn. Bhd joined the Global Forest and Trade Network (GFTN) in Malaysia, WWF’s initiative to save the world’s most valuable and threatened forests. European Paper Sector Reaches New Heights in Recycling
From the European Recovered Paper Council: The European Recovered Paper Council (ERPC) today announced that the paper and board recycling rate in Europe reached 64.5% in 2007, which confirms that the industry is on track to meet its voluntary target of 66% by 2010. The total amount of paper collected and sent to be recycled in paper mills was 60.1 million tonnes, an increase of 7.6 million tonnes (or +14.5%) since 2004, the base year for the target. » Read more

The Global Forest & Trade Network Workshop in Lao PDR

Ghana Achieves Historic VPA First
From Timber Trades Journal (UK): Ghana has become the first country to sign a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) to prevent illegal timber imports from the nation entering the EU. The landmark legally-binding agreement was signed in Accra by Ghana’s forestry minister Esther Obeng Dapaah and Stefano Manservisi, the EU’s director-general for development.
