The identification of timber species plays an essential role in the management of timber resources and the control of illegal trade. Timber identification requires specific professional skills and knowledge coupled with practical experience and toolkits which include timber identification guides and reference documents.

As part of the RAFT partnership in Viet Nam, TRAFFIC, WWF and VN Forest have produced a useful toolkit, which features a timber identification and reference guide providing information on Viet Nam’s legislative framework and guidelines for handling violations. The toolkit supports enforcement officers in their efforts to clamp down on traffickers of illegal timber and better protect the forests of Southeast Asia.

The toolkit include the following sections: (i) Timber trade regulations in Viet Nam, (ii) Timber identification contacts, (iii) Handling regulated timber species, and (iv) Timber identification guidance.
