Overview of Forest and Trade in Malaysia
Natural forest cover of Malaysia is estimated to be about 59.5% of the total land area, and much of it is within Permanent Forest Estates (PFEs) (Peninsular Malaysia Forestry Department, 2005). Unfortunately, FAO 2002 statistic shows that unsustainable forest harvesting has reduced 0.34 million hectares of the total forest cover from the year 1995 to 1998.
Despite the forest degradation, timber and timber-based products are two of Malaysia’s major export commodities. Until October 2005, the timber sector contributed approximately RM17.8 million to Malaysia's economy (Department of Statistic Malaysia, 2005).
As an effort to promote sustainable forest management and curb illegal logging, there are two certification schemes active in Malaysia: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Malaysia Timber Certification Council (MTCC).
