Brazilian edition of the new book by Saramago will have the FSC seal
The FSC - Forest Stewardship Council is a green seal which ensures that the forest material in the product - in this case the paper made from pulp - comes from a forest which is correctly treated from the ecologic, social and economic points of view and that the entire operation in the production chain is also legal and can be traced back into the forest. In order to seal the book, it was necessary to certify all parts involved, starting with the forest unit, going through the manufacturer to the print house.
Saramago, who made a point of having the book published in Brazil on FSC certified paper, will be present at the launching event on October 27 in São Paulo, Brazil.
The companies directly involved include Geográfica printing house, Suzano (forest owner and paper manufacturer), Companhia das Letras Publisher and Imaflora, the Brazilian NGO representing the accredited certifier Rainforest Alliance. WWF-Brazil and its partners in the market and communications working group within FSC Brazil also played an important role for this to happen.
To have a certified book, and one by Saramago, is a milestone for FSC certification in Brazil, because it will give a lot of visibility to the FSC brand and makes it an attractive and accessible product in the shelves of bookstores.
Plus it will reach a new segment: the cultural industry, also very important to form opinion. It thus provides a good trailer for the joint FSC campaign planned for launching in 2006.
